Responsiveness in practice at the Beijing Forum 2019

GoNano deals with questions how to improve the responsiveness of research and innovation to public values and concerns. In November, Anne Dijkstra, researcher at the University of Twente, was invited to present findings from GoNano at the Beijing Forum 2019 in China. She reflected on responsiveness and discussed how GoNano tries to establish a responsible science-society relationship in practice.

The Beijing Forum was founded in 2004 and means to stimulate dialogue between cultures, to foster cultural openness and appreciation between people and nations, to broaden consensus on what the world’s most urgent problems are and to work towards sustainable development in global politics, culture and economy. The guiding principle for the Beijing Forum The Harmony of Civilizations and Prosperity for All is a call for action to the world. Each year, a selection of intellectuals and academics all over the world are invited to contribute to the discussions organized by the Beijing Forum which is organised by Peking University, the Beijing Municipal Commission of Education and the Korea Foundation for Advanced Studies.

This year the Beijing Forum took place from 1-3 November. In beautiful late Summer weather, more than 500 invited academics and intellectuals from all over the world contributed to the discussions on sub themes such as Diverse Civilizations, The Changing World and The Future of Humankind. Anne Dijkstra was invited to contribute to the panel session Science, Technology, Health and Society in the Context of Science Culture. In her presentation, entitled A global perspective on a responsible science-society relationship, she reflected on the development of Responsible Research and Innovation and discussed how activities for the GoNano project are exploring the possibilities of such a sustainable science-society relationship.
